Your privacy

Your notebook is yours.

A plain-language explanation of what Eterna stores, what connects to the internet, and the choices you have.

Privacy Policy

Your writing stays in your browser on your device. Daily photos are the exception to offline use: when enabled, they connect to a photo service and Unsplash. This policy covers the current Eterna extension and this website.

1. What this policy covers

Eterna is a personal notebook for Chrome, available in the side panel and on the new tab page. It helps you keep notes, tasks, events, reminders, people, and a scratchpad together. In this policy, “Eterna” means the extension and its developer, and “this website” means these product, help, and policy pages.

The extension and the website work differently. Visiting this website does not give it access to your Eterna notebook. The current extension has no account system or cloud sync.

2. What stays on your device

The extension stores the information you choose to enter or save in your browser profile. This can include:

  • Note text, titles, tags, nested pages, pinned items, and creation or edit dates.
  • Tasks, completion status, event dates and times, time zones, and reminder settings.
  • People’s names and any relationship notes, email addresses, phone numbers, or follow-up dates you add.
  • Images and image descriptions, your scratchpad, an optional personal background photo, and focus-timer state.
  • Selected website text and its source page title and address, when you choose to save a selection.
  • Appearance preferences, backup dates, local photo-cache details, interface preferences, and temporary editing drafts.

Notes and images are kept in the browser’s local database. Settings and other interface state use local browser storage. Eterna uses this information to display, organize, search, and save your notebook and to schedule reminders on your device.

Eterna does not upload your notebook content to its developer or the photo providers. There is no advertising, behavioral analytics, telemetry, or remote crash-reporting service in the current extension. Errors may be written to your browser’s local developer console.

3. Daily photos and network requests

“Fresh photo every day” is on by default. When a daily-photo background is in use, Eterna asks its photo service which image to show, then your browser loads the image from Unsplash. A successful photo selection is cached locally for the day. Failed requests may be retried later.

The photo service is hosted on Vercel at burrow-photos.vercel.app. “Burrow” is Eterna’s earlier name. The service requests a nature photograph from the Unsplash API and reports its use to Unsplash. It does not receive your notebook content.

These connections expose ordinary request information, such as your IP address, browser information, and request time, to the services handling the request. The image request also includes a requested image width. The photo-function code does not create a user database; hosting and delivery providers can process request logs under their own practices. Exact provider log-retention periods are not set by the extension.

Turn off Fresh photo every day in Settings to stop these daily-photo connections. Eterna can show bundled photographs instead. Your own background photo is processed and stored locally.

Read the Vercel Privacy Notice and Unsplash Privacy Policy for those providers’ information handling and contact options.

4. Why the extension asks for permissions

Eterna uses Chrome permissions for the features you see:

  • Side panel: opens your notebook alongside a web page.
  • Storage and unlimited storage: save preferences and keep notes and images locally.
  • Alarms: schedule event, task, and focus-timer reminders, and local housekeeping.
  • Notifications: display reminders you set. Reminder titles and times can appear in your operating system’s notification interface.
  • Context menus: add “Save selection to Eterna” to the right-click menu.
  • Active tab: access the current page title and address when you invoke a relevant Eterna action, such as saving selected text.

Eterna replaces Chrome’s new tab page with its Home view. It does not request access to your browsing history or bookmarks, and it does not inject content scripts into the pages you visit. Saving a selection is an action you choose, not automatic browsing-history collection.

5. Backups and moving your notebook

Back up now in Settings creates a downloadable .eterna file. It includes your entries, including archived and trashed entries still present, note images, and saved settings such as the scratchpad. Your custom Home background photo is not included.

Backups are ordinary ZIP files and are not encrypted by Eterna. Keep them somewhere you trust. Anyone who can access a backup may be able to read its contents. If you place a backup in a cloud folder or send it to another person, that is a copy you control and the destination’s policies apply.

Restore reads the file you choose on your device. It does not upload it. The current version uses manual backups and optional backup reminders; it does not automatically synchronize your notebook between devices. Older .burrow backups can also be restored.

6. Keeping and deleting information

Your local notebook remains in your browser profile until you change or delete it, clear its storage, or uninstall the extension. Archived entries remain saved. Items moved to Trash can be restored while they are there; local housekeeping permanently removes entries that have been in Trash for more than 30 days. You can also delete an entry permanently or empty Trash yourself. Images that no longer belong to an entry are removed during local housekeeping.

Use Settings → Erase all data to clear your notebook entries, images, custom background, and saved extension settings, then return Eterna to its welcome experience. Some browser interface preferences may remain. This action does not delete backup files you previously downloaded or copies you stored elsewhere.

Uninstalling Eterna or resetting the browser profile can delete the local notebook. Make a backup first if you want to keep it. The developer does not hold a server copy and cannot recover your writing for you.

Provider request records are separate from your notebook. Their retention and deletion are governed by the relevant provider’s practices; deleting your local notebook does not delete their request logs.

7. Visiting this website

This website serves product information and help pages. Its fonts and photographs are hosted with the site. It has no accounts, payment forms, newsletter forms, advertising scripts, or analytics scripts. The site code does not set cookies or save preferences in local storage; temporary interaction state lasts only while the page is open.

Like other websites, it must receive a request to deliver a page. This website is hosted by Vercel, which processes technical information such as IP addresses, browser details, requested pages, and timestamps to deliver the site and keep it secure, as described in the Vercel Privacy Notice. Eterna adds no logging or analytics of its own to the website.

Following an external link takes you to another service. That service’s privacy policy applies, and your browser makes its own connection to it. The website does not read or connect to the extension’s local database.

8. Security, control, and your rights

Local storage gives you direct control of your writing, but it is not a password-protected vault. The current extension does not add passphrase encryption to your notebook or backups. Protect access to your device, browser profile, and exported files, particularly on a shared computer.

You can inspect, edit, export, and delete your content in the extension. You can turn off fresh daily photos and control browser notifications in Chrome and your operating system. Eterna does not sell your notebook content or share it for advertising.

Depending on where you live and the information involved, applicable law may give you additional rights concerning personal information. Local notebook content can be managed directly in Eterna because the developer does not hold a copy. For information processed by a photo or hosting provider, its privacy notice explains its rights and contact procedures. Such providers may process technical request information outside your country.

9. Questions and policy updates

For questions about Eterna or these policies, email devbysagar@gmail.com. Include only the information needed to explain your request. Do not send your notebook or a backup unless you choose to share that content.

If you contact the developer through a published support channel, the message and any information you choose to include will be available to the recipient and their email provider. Sending a support request does not grant access to the rest of your notebook.

This policy describes the current version of Eterna. It will be updated if Eterna’s data practices change, with the revised date shown on this page. Any future account, sync, payment, or other service would need its own accurate disclosure before it is introduced.
